P + J : 10.04.08

Primped, anthing but proper, and ready to go, the girls headed off from my Granny’s house to the venue for pre-ceremony picture time.  I wasn’t nervous or anxious, and our busy day kept me focused and in a fab mood all day…

(Sigh – he’s so adorable…)

Then came the inevitable near-breakdown (for me) due to the issues with flowers, signage not being posted as I instructed, and me trying to finalize my vows…it was time for a deep breath, a quick cry (missing my grandpa), lots of kisses from the fam as we lined up and got ready to go, and one last HOLLER!

Getting Our Hair Did & Hating on Flowers

Picking up where we left off, the girls headed out bright and earlyish for hair appointments, followed by makeup provided by the amazingly talented Michael Weiss (freelance makeup artist, works days @ Bobbi Brown @ Mayfair – Facebook him!), who met us at my Granny’s for the end of the primping!

Sarah, Paul’s “Best Woman,” and Nicole, my cousin and bridesmaid, looking HOT, above!  Then we were off!

My lovely Maid of Honor/Sister, PSYCHED for the impending shindig!

My mama make a gorgeous chauffeur!

At the venue, Downtown Milwaukee Transit Center’s Harbor Lights Room, we were met by the florist (Vender Critique to come, I promise!), whose sole purpose, it seems, was to disappoint the bride.  They worked, but EVERYTHING except for Art’s bout was wrong.  Luckily, our (amazing) photographers didn’t include the (multiple) pics of my flipping off my (crap) bouquet in our proof book.

(supposed to be simple, mostly white hydrangeas with a few orange orchids and chocolate cosmos; ended up much too orange/cluttered-looking – and are those rhinestones in the centers of the orchids?!  gag)

The flowers were decidedly UNchic.

After some intense pre-ceremony moments, we were ready to get the show on the road!

Highs and Lows – Weekend in Review

Highs:

  • Brunette at DMB Concert; early 20s; slender
    • well-fitting mig-wash jeans
    • white short-sleeved tee
    • brown patchwork crochet tank – not too hippyish
    • flip flops
    • Why it works: super cute; occassion-appropriate; slightly hippy, but not stink-super-hippy
  • Mom shopping with fam at Forever 21; late 30s; gorgeous black woman with super-short/buzzed hair
    • lemon/lime green button-down; tucked in
    • charcoal gray pencil skirt
    • super high heeled black peeptoed slingbacks
    • designer bag (Dooney & Burke)
    • Why it works: super glam, but not unapproachable; heels on a Sunday, while out with 3 kids and hubby – insane hot! v. figure flattering

Lows:

  • Overly dressed-up girls at DMB
    • Seen: huge earrings, clubby tube tops, tight jeans, heels, cutesy sandals and wedges, “done” hair, loads of makeup (esp. eyeliner)
    • Why it doesn’t work: extremely occassion-inappropriate; not weather-compliant
  • Stanky hippies
    • Rant: OK – SO – if you’re trying your best to be “individual,” why would you choose to dress like every one of your friends?  The same goes for “goths” these days!  Initially, it was super unique, but by now, it’s just conceeding to the norms of a group, instead of truly being different…

All in all, DMB was amazing people-watching!  Especially because the amphitheater was crazy muddy and we had prime biff-watching seats…LOVE IT!

Highs and Lows: Typical Tuesday

Highs:

  • June
    • late 30s, cute, mom-ish, recently lost 30 lbs!
    • black short-sleeved, v-neck tee; white on black polka dot, chiffony skirt with matching sash belt; black peep-toed pumps; simple black bead on silver chain necklace
    • hair less coiffed than usual – v. cute!
    • more form-fitting than usual; very flattering and hip
  • Martha
    • early 50s, thin-ish, hip grandma
    • turquoise long-skirt suit in linen-ish/light fabric; white mandarin-collar knit top; beige kitten-heeled slingbacks
    • love the bright, solid-colored suit; it was impecably tailored as well as age, season, and occassion-appropriate!

Lows:

  • Woman in her early 50s, average h/w
    • black bias-cut silk dress with tan dots; brown cardigan with border beading and center tie closure; gold hoop earrings; long silver necklace with geometric black beads
    • Why it doesn’t work: dress and cardigan don’t match – style or color-wise; necklace doesn’t match stylistically or go with other jewelry metal

Highs and Lows – Monday at the Office

Highs:

  • Arthur!
    • 27, tall, beefy, and completely gorgeous (although I might be a bit biased)
    • Yesterday was my fiance’s first day at a new company. He’s the newest “Interactive Web Developer” at a very high profile PR/Advertising agency in downtown Milwaukee and is definitely up for dressing the part!
    • Brown herringbone pants (Banana); White oxford with brown diagonal stripes (Banana); Funky new dark brown Steve Madden loafers with distressed leather top panel

paulshirt.jpgpaulpants.jpg

Lows:

  • Woman in a black suit w/ above the knee skirt; undistinguishable green blouse; sheer black hose; black close-toed strappy wedges
    • Why it doesn’t work: suit looked to be poor quality; skirt was ill-fitting; shirt was blah; black hose too heavy for summer; shoes were just bad – and badly scuffed

Highs and Lows: Casual Day at Work

Yesterday we had a casual day at work – how fun to see everyone in their “everyday” clothes!  I personally had a more difficult time choosing an outfit than usual, as it was stressful to find something “casual,” but still professional and not too trendy.  There were a couple of pleasant surprises though!

Highs

  • “Jenny”
    • Mid-30’s, 5 months pregnant, super-cute girl-next door
    • Cute beige cropped pants; white eyelet empire-waisted top
  • “Barb”
    • Early 50’s, thin
    • great skinny-ish jeans; animal-print, chiffony, kimono tunic; slim black flip flops
  • “Mary”
    • Mid-Late 40’s, fit, above-average pretty
    • Pinkish-tan cropped pants; white peasanty (but not too much) top; pinkish-tan low-heeled slingbacks; too much jewelry
  • Me (naturally!)
    • Cropped blue-gray pants (Old Navy); white layering tank (?); black, pouf and short-sleeved knit top with crochet detail at split-nick (Banana Outlet); blue Havaianas

Lows

  • Young woman, early 20’s, tall, thin, v. pretty (GAG)
    • Bright yellow thin-knit tee; white cami underneath; tight black clubby flared pants; high black pointed-toe pumps; too much makeup
    • Why it doesn’t work: top and bottom halves weren’t cohesive; it was also kind of slutty
  • All the ladies in bad capris; overly matchy-matchy outfits; way too many clunky slides
